Shorty

Shorty is a 14.2h Morgan gelding. D.O.B 1987. Through a member of the Connecticut Farm Bureau, one of Shorty’s original owners found us! In November 2009, we met Karen S. at the Equine Affaire. We wanted to share Karen’s history of Shorty with you:
“His registered name is Capt Americal Callin, he was named Captain. I bought him as a coming 6 year old to be a lightly used lesson horse in 1993. I already had a morgan on the farm being boarded that was called Captain, so I renamed him "Barney", because I already had a Fred, Pebbles and Bam-Bam, can you see the theme? :) I owned him until March of 1997 and only sold him because he would bond with only a couple of kids and I couldn't see making him unhappy. He was shown at 1 or 2 Morgan shows as a youngster (with original owner) but was born with that back, it did not get progressively worse. He was shown in a futurity in In-Hand and Driving and was entered before birth, so needless to say they were heartbroken to see him born with a back so badly swayed. He was loved also by the girl that I had bought him from. I had leased him to a wonderful girl and she just played with him and rode him all around her yard and family circumstances forced the end of her lease. I very reluctantly sold him to what was supposed to be a wonderful home in North Stonington, for a little boy's first horse. He was going to do leadline with him and eventually progress to walk-trot but I never heard from her after the first month and have always wondered where he went to.”
The next 8 years of Shorty’s life from 1997-2005 are still unknown. We adopted him from NEER in the fall of 2005. He was on the way to the slaughter house until he was rescued by NEER. Now, even though he is the smallest of the 4 horses residing at Drafty Pines Farm, he thinks he's just as big as the other boys. Although Shorty's back looks unusual, he gets frequent vet checks and is not in any pain while under saddle. Shorty is reserved for those riders weighing 115 lbs and under due to his back condition.
